Preparing Your Garden for Winter

As the vibrant colors of fall fade and the crisp air of winter approaches, it's time to prepare your garden for the cold months ahead. Proper preparation protects your plants and soil and sets the stage for a healthy, thriving garden come spring. Here are some essential steps to ensure your Midwest garden is ready to face the winter chill.

Clean Up the Garden

Remove Dead Plants:

  • Annuals and Vegetables: Clear away all dead annuals and vegetable plants. These plants can become hosts for pests and diseases if left in the garden over winter.

  • Diseased Plants: Remove any plants showing signs of disease. Be sure to dispose of these plants away from your compost pile to prevent the spread of pathogens.

  • Composting: Healthy plant material can be added to your compost pile, but ensure it is well-chopped to speed up decomposition. Diseased plants should be discarded or burned to prevent contamination.

  • Weed Thoroughly: Pull out any remaining weeds. They can harbor diseases and pests that may harm your garden in the spring.

Mulching

Apply Mulch: Insulate the soil and protect plant roots with a thick layer of mulch.

Choose Organic Mulches: Use straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips. Avoid compacting mulches that may suffocate plant roots.

Protecting Perennials and Shrubs

Cut Back Perennials: Trim perennials to about 4-6 inches above the ground to reduce disease and pest risks.

Mulch Around Shrubs: Apply mulch around the base of shrubs and perennials to protect roots from freezing.

Wrap Delicate Plants: Use burlap or other protective materials to shield delicate shrubs and small trees from harsh winds and temperature fluctuations.

Lawn Care

Rake Leaves: Clear leaves from your lawn to prevent smothering and fungal diseases. Fallen leaves can create a damp environment that promotes mold and pests, so be thorough in your raking.

Final Mow: Mow your lawn one last time, cutting it slightly shorter than usual to prevent snow mold. Keeping your grass at an optimal height reduces the risk of fungal infections that thrive under snow cover.

Fall Lawn Food: Apply high-quality fall lawn food to strengthen your grass for the winter. At Farrill’s Sunrise Nursery, we offer a variety of fall lawn care products designed to provide essential nutrients that help your lawn withstand the cold and come back greener and healthier in the spring. Our products are specifically formulated to promote root growth and improve resilience against winter stress.

Watering

Deep Watering: Water your garden thoroughly before the ground freezes to ensure plants have adequate moisture.

Drain Irrigation Systems: Drain and store hoses, and blow out irrigation systems to prevent freezing damage.

Pruning and Winterizing

Pruning Trees and Shrubs: Prune dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs to prevent winter breakage and promote healthy growth in the spring. Avoid heavy pruning of flowering shrubs until after they bloom.

Winterizing Yard Furniture: Store or cover garden furniture, decorations, and pots to protect them from the winter elements.

Protecting Young Trees: Wrap the trunks of young trees with tree wrap or burlap to protect them from sunscald and animal damage.

By following these steps, you can ensure your garden is well-prepared for winter and ready to flourish when spring arrives. Visit Farrill’s Sunrise Nursery for all your winter gardening needs and expert advice. Happy gardening!
